Evidence-based medicine or market-based medicine? The role of pharmaceutical companies within medicine is coming into question. Its role in evidence based medicine with a focus of industry corruption, particularly within psychiatric research will be explored by guest facilitator, Leemon B. McHenry during this month’s HEAL ethics cafe. Co-facilitating will be Peter Parry, child & adolescent psychiatrist and senior lecturer with UQ, who will discuss documents from his co-authored article: “From Evidence-Based Medicine to Marketing-Based Medicine: Evidence from Internal Industry Documents” (Spielmans & Parry, Journal of Bioethical Inquiry, 2010, 7:13-29.) It will lend for a lively discussion over the philosophical, ethical and legal dilemmas of evidence based medicine.

Leemon B. McHenry
Leemon B. McHenry is a retired lecturer in philosophy at California State University, Northridge, California and research consultant for the Los Angeles Law Firm, Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman.  He received his PhD in philosophy from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.  He specializes in philosophy of science and medical ethics.  His forthcoming book, The Illusion of Evidence-Based Medicine, with Jon Jureidini, is expected to appear with Springer in 2020.
